Heat pump or gas boiler: what would it cost to run?

An honest comparison using today’s price cap. Put in your yearly gas use and see how a heat pump compares.

How much gas do you use a year?

It’s on your annual statement or energy app. Not sure? 9,500 kWh is a typical home.

How efficient is the heat pump?

Units of heat out for each unit of electricity in, over a year. A good installer designs for 3 or more.

Will you stop using gas completely?

Heating and hot water, a year

Gas boiler (incl. standing charge)
£865
Heat pump
£767

£99 cheaper

Using standard price cap rates. A heat pump tariff with cheaper rates at certain times can save more. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme takes £7,500 off the cost of installing one.

How we work this out
  • Prices from the Ofgem price cap for October to December 2026: electricity 26.32p and gas 7.97p per kWh, gas standing charge 29.68p a day.
  • The heat your boiler makes = your gas use × 92%, the minimum efficiency for new gas boilers in England (Boiler Plus). Older boilers are less efficient, so your saving may be bigger.
  • The heat pump makes the same heat using electricity ÷ its efficiency. A typical air source system manages about 3 (Which?); the Energy Saving Trust says 3 to 4.
  • Electricity standing charges are left out, as you pay them either way. The gas standing charge (about £108 a year) is only saved if you close your gas account completely. A rough guide, not a quote.

Is a heat pump right for your home?

An air source heat pump takes heat from the outside air, even in winter, and uses it to heat your home and hot water. The Energy Saving Trust says that for every unit of electricity it uses, a heat pump gives out three to four times as much heat.

  • Good fit: homes with reasonable insulation, space outside for the unit, and room for a hot water cylinder.
  • Biggest savings: homes moving off oil, LPG or old electric heaters, and homes that can use a heat pump electricity tariff.
  • Worth checking: some radiators may need to be swapped for larger ones, because heat pumps run at lower temperatures than boilers.
